Death of the car? That’s funny. The first word of the article, “Cities,” is an indication that the author’s perspective is skewed in this click-bait headline. Sure enough, there is very little discussion about the non-urbanized areas. We will always need fast, efficient, inexpensive transportation to travel the long distances in the rural areas.

I see the author’s point about people’s’ fear of public transportation and the pressure to start driving cars instead. The current trend of banning cars and closing roads by local governments is going to face a lot of backlash o nce everyone is over the fear and realizes they they need the public transport and bicycles won’t provide the range or weather protection. I say this as someone who loves bikes and would like to see them used more often.

I’m pretty sure  things will go back to the way they were.

no, once something similar to normal comes, people will forget the corona Virus, then same old as before. I’m guessing more pickups and SUV/CUVs on the roads

I think you need an asterisk * in the USA. worldwide the population is moving to cities as they industrialize the same way the in the USA during the later 1800s as people went to work in factories.

I don’t think there needs to be an asterisk. Even as populations migrate to cities, there will still always be a need for fast, efficient, convenient transportation in the rural areas. That need will never go away.

People in the cities may avoid public transportation for a while, but as soon as they realize they can’t afford the cost of parking their cars in the city and that riding a bike for transportation in the heat/ rain/snow/etc. really sucks, they will take precautions and start using public transportation again. Give it some time and people will stop wearing masks and start touching their faces and we’ll be right back where we started.
